ITF Korean Demonstration Team to tour U.S.
This year, during the fall, the ITF Korean Demonstration Team will make a multi city tour of the United States of America. The team will be led by VII Dan Master Son Song Gun. He was the 1988 World Champion in both patterns and sparring. Master Son Song Gun has toured many countries demonstrating Taekwon-Do and has taught in Austria, Mongolia and Czechoslovakia. It is hoped that Taekwon-Do will play a similar role that table tennis (ping pong) did, for the warming up of the relationship between the USA and China, back in the 60s and 70s.

President's Message:
Our Action Plans for the Continuing Development of the ITF
Affiliation: ITF HQ Vienna, President Trân Triêu Quân

"We are now well into the year 2006, and the next ITF Congress Meeting will be held just over one year from now in Quebec City (Canada). This means that the ITF team that was elected three years ago is nearing the end of its current mandate. Much has been accomplished, but we will continue to work together with our members to make the ITF an organization that we can all be proud of. You will recall that in my acceptance speech when I was elected president of the ITF at the 14th Congress in Warsaw (Poland), I described my vision of the ITF as a democratically-operated, well-structured organization dedicated to helping its members to develop Taekwon-Do in all its aspects and providing the services its members want and need..." Iraqi Tae Kwon Do Team Kidnapped
In Baghdad, coaches, athletes and families gathered Thursday at the capital's taekwondo union, consoling one another and waiting for news about 15 martial arts competitors -- including five members of Iraq's national taekwondo team and the only Iraqi to win a medal at an Asian regional competition in April -- who were abducted Monday on the dangerous desert road between Fallujah and Ramadi. The athletes, dressed in track suits and athletic shoes, had been heading to neighboring Jordan for a vacation.

My Thoughts on Nigeria and the ITF
Affiliation: ITF HQ Canada, President Choi, Jung Hwa
by Mr. Michael Tibollo
Submitted by Mr. George Ahiru, Nigeria

I have just returned from a trip that saw me travel to Ireland, Nigeria and then Egypt. I previously wrote about the success of the Master's Seminar in Ireland and the sense of family that seems to always underscore an International event. Clearly, Master Choi is very fortunate to have an organization that believes in him and all that his father taught him. Likewise, the organization is fortunate to have a solid base of Master's and Senior instructors that are adamant about preserving the art as developed by General Choi.

Having left Master Choi's side in Ireland, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton, several of their students, my daughter and I left for Lagos, Nigeria. Never having travelled to Africa, we all relied on Mr. and Mrs. Dalton to set the stage on what to expect. No amount of preparation could have prepared us for this trip. Joined by Master Nicholls and several ITF members from England, the stage was set for what was to be a life changing experience for all those that participated.

We were greeted at the airport by Mr. Ashiru and several of his students. In tow, were also two Lasallian Brothers that had been corresponding with my daughter. The Brothers are missionaries teaching in a small town about twelve hours by car from Lagos. The school in Naka is a sister school to the school my daughter attends in Canada. My daughter came to Africa with the group to assist in the translation from English to French for our members from Algeria and hopefully learn a little Taekwon-Do along with the rest of us. As part of her remuneration, she convinced me to accompany her to Naka to deliver a donation from the sister school in Canada. I must say that the experience was incredible. I would like to thank Austin for safely transporting us along very dangerous roads to the school and back to Lagos.

The seminar began on Friday. Unfortunately, because of our excursion, I was not able to attend the first day. I did however attend the second day. The members that were present were eager to learn and the seminar proceeded with Master Nicholls and Mr. Dalton. Everyone worked hard to review the Umpire Rules and practice what they were taught. In addition, given the number of participants from England and Ireland, they were also given lessons in the fundamental movements and patterns. The training hall was at the University of Lagos. I think the average temperature during the seminar was 34 degrees Celsius but the humidity made it feel like 40!

The seminar hosted by Mr. Ashiru had students from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Senegal, and Algeria. I was impressed at the number in attendance from other countries, not because of numbers, but simply because of the effort necessary to get to Lagos. Many of you won't know this, but for someone to travel within Africa, it is easier to fly to Europe and catch a flight back to the African destination. In fact, when I was leaving for Egypt, the members from Algeria were catching a plane to Milan, Italy for a connecting flight back to Algeria. You go figure! I congratulate all those in attendance for this incredible effort.

I would also like to congratulate Mr. Ashiru for his hard work and dedication. He is struggling to build on General Choi's dream to have ITF Taekwon-Do in Nigeria. I am also very proud to have participated in the first organizational meeting of the African countries. I met many people that hold great promise for the development of Taekwon-Do in Africa and I look forward to hearing more about their development. I am sure our visit will be remembered, not only by those in attendance but also by the millions of people that read the national papers and listen to the national radio stations. I lost count at the number of interviews I gave in the three days I was there.

I would also like to thank Master Choi for allowing me to join Mr. and Mrs. Dalton in this historic step of bringing ITF to Africa. On the Fortieth Anniversary of the founding of the International Taekwon-Do Federation, I am proud to be a member and serve the son of the Founder. I am also proud to see that Master Choi is following in his father's footsteps and continuing his legacy. General Choi spoke to me of the importance of Taekwon-Do being practised everywhere in the world and Master Choi is doing all that he has been entrusted to do. It is an honour to work with him and be part of these historic events. I am also very thankful to Mr. and Mrs. Dalton, Master Ogbourne and all their students that generously donated do-boks and equipment to our brothers and sisters in Africa. The organization is strong and will continue to grow because of the tremendous support from people like them!

I understand that there will be at least four more trips to Africa this year by senior instructors with a proposal for an exchange program next year. I would also imagine there will be a World Championship there some day as well!

My final days in Africa were spent in Cairo, Egypt where I visited a WTF do-jang and met with some senior instructors. It is interesting to note that the sense of family continues to pervade regardless of the country visited.

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITF
A message from Master Trân Triêu Quân
Affiliation: ITF HQ Vienna, President Trân Triêu Quân

On March 22, 1966, the ITF was founded in Seoul, Republic of Korea, by General Choi Hong Hi with nine founding member countries. It was the first international organization established to govern the development of Taekwon-Do. ITF is very proud of this honour.

Taekwon-Do became very popular, thanks to the complete physical fitness it provided to those who practised it. Its techniques are particularly appreciated for their effectiveness and their aesthetic.

The founder of the ITF, late General Choi Hong Hi, spent his life developing a scientific and logical ITF system with more than 3000 movements and 24 patterns (Chon-Ji system), integrating the use of the sine wave to generate exceptional power during movements. This technical system is a well-known system where mouvements include aesthetic, strenght and breathing. ITF Taekwon-Do provides an effective way to develop a great spirit in a healthy body.

General Choi has elaborated the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, an exhaustive 15 volume work first published in 1983. It became the reference standard for instructors and students worldwide. ITF is one of the rare martial arts which are endowed with such rich documentation.

The ITF has also developed a complete tournament system with patterns, sparring, power test and special techniques. These events may be performed individually or in teams. The system ensures a good control and command of the techniques which are both spectacular and safe.

The ITF evolved a lot since the 1960s! At that time, the practice resembled the Karate Shotokan. Now, with the integration of the sine wave, it confers harmony and improvement.

Even though General Choi passed away June 15, 2002, the ITF is still evolving. During the last three years, your ITF team has worked very hard to modernize its administration and structure. Tools such as the new Constitution, By-Law and policies are among the important assets of this evolution/progress, as well as the new services and the new ITF website.

The dimension of the «Do», which makes ITF Taekwon-Do a true martial art, has not yet received all the attention it deserves. This is why the Teaching of the «Do» is one of our priorities. Indeed, major progress has been made on that part, but this year we will implement the first phase of this strategic program.

The art of Taekwon-Do is a world heritage. I firmly believe that the great future of ITF Taekwon-Do lies in the fullest development of its four facets: sport, martial art, way of life and tool for social development.

ITF Taekwon-Do contributes to the development of both individuals (for example, self-esteem) and society (for example, peace, freedom and justice). It provides us with the means to train ourselves in overcoming important obstacles and reach our objective to develop a better and more peaceful world. Here is our challenge: to lead Taekwon-Do into serving humanity! ITF members are citizens with strong minds in strong bodies.

We are very proud of our ITF!

16TH CAMP TAEKWON-DO INCORPORATING ITF INTERNATIONAL REFEREE COURSE & EURO-AFRICA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Affiliation: ITF HQ Canada, President Choi, Jung Hwa

On the 27th of March 2006, members of the International Taekwon-Do Federation from several continents will converge to celebrate ITF 40th anniversary in Africa, on the occasion of the first ever ITF International Umpire Course to be organized in Africa. This event is to be hosted by the University of Lagos Taekwon-Do Club, continuing her excellent tradition of hosting world class event.

This event will culminate the three years of extensive work by "friends of Africa" in the ITF family who have worked to improve multilateral relationships and growth in Africa. Grandmaster Choi's decided interest in Africa was expressed through Mr Don Dalton of ITF-Ireland several years ago after meeting with Mr George Ashiru at an international event in Europe. Since, and with the active cooperation of Master Sahota, the ITF gradually received new memberships from all the regions of Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, South Africa, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Togo, Congo Brazaville.

The ITF Secretary General, Master Nicholls, also made contact with Mr Ashiru of ITF Nigeria and discussed ways to encourage active participation of the continent in the growth of ITF in Africa. Several initiatives were brought forward and after the trip of Mr and Mrs Dalton to Nigeria for the first ITF West-Africa Instructor program, the stage was set for a larger event. During the ITF South American Championship in Argentina, Grandmaster Choi received a report of the progress of assimilating more African INOs into the ITF and the ITF President immediately approved a series of events, which will begin with Master Galarraga coming for the ITF Umpire Course in March / April in Nigeria and Master Nicholls doing another Instructor program in Ghana for May, both for 2006, while Master Maidana will visit North Africa sometime later for another regional training program. All this will culminate in Grandmaster Choi visiting the continent for ITF's first IIC in more than four decades.

Already, ITF members from as far as Nepal will be in Lagos in less than two weeks to enjoy the international standards of the ITF. Participants will visit several tourist sites in and around Lagos and there will be a courtesy visit to one of Nigeria's Governors. The course will be rounded up with the 2nd ITF Intercontinental Cup pitting Europe's best against Africa as well as an open championships. All events will be held at the new Sports Hall of the University of Lagos University. Lagos is happy to have many friends coming to visit and we wish all visitors a pleasant trip in advance.

International Taekwon-Do Federation
A Message from the President as we begin the year 2006
Affiliation: ITF HQ Vienna, President Trân Triêu Quân
As we begin the New Year, I would like to respond to certain concerns that some of you have expressed. Some are discouraged that more than two years after the death of our Founder, there are still two other groups claiming to be the "real" ITF. They are tired of the ongoing conflict and don't understand why it can't be settled.

Others just want to practice Taekwon-Do and not have to worry about the “political” side. They are interested in Taekwon-Do training and the values it promotes; they want to continue to perfect their techniques and participate in competitions.

A few have even been suggested that the leaders of the ITF are partly responsible for the situation, because we took legal action, asking the tribunals to stop the wrongful activities of Mr. Chang Ung’s group.

Some have urged a more conciliatory approach toward Mr. Chang Ung’s group, while others believe we are not doing enough to counter their repeated attacks.

A lot of false rumors have been spread and erroneous information has been circulated. This has created uncertainty and been a source of confusion for many. So I would like to set the record straight by explaining what has happened, what it means for the ITF, and what we are planning for the future.
