Another Lesson for General Choi
I first met General Choi in Williams Lake B.C. in 1986 when I
was a Red Belt. The General had come to B.C. to show his support for Mr. John Roussel, who had recently returned
to the ITF.
Not
knowing proper protocol I went up and talked to him when he was out in the hall. I asked to have my picture taken
with him and he agreed. (As a side note, when I got home I went to take the film out of the camera, after I thought
I had rewound it, and as the film had not been rewound I lost all the pictures).
Later
in the day we all lined up to get the General's autograph and when it was my turn I again broke protocol by presenting
him with a pen/pencil set which he seemed genuinely pleased to receive. After all had a chance to get General Choi's
autograph we went to the other end of the Gym to get pictures taken and the General & I walk there together.
Whilst walking to the other end of the Gym General Choi put his arm on my shoulder and said something along the
lines of he enjoyed meeting me and that he hoped I would continue in my training.
The
point of all this is that through the years I have attended several General Choi seminars and learned the error
of my ways by the way I originally approached the General. What does all this mean? The General was a gracious
Leader, who accepted other's mistakes and made them feel as if they were truly important to him.
We
all could learn a lot from this and I truly hope this will happen.
Kamsahamnida, General Choi.

My Favourite Memory
I had the most wonderful opportunity in October of 1999 to travel
to Canada to meet the General at an Instructor's Course he gave! One of my greatest memories of him was the explanation
of the 'pulling back of the hand and arm' after the low fingertip thrust in the pattern Toi-gye! Now, you can imagine
what he told us, can't you? It's just about the best explanation and I will never forget it! I got some great pictures
of his birthday dinner and party to celebrate his 81st birthday. Memories like these will be with me always!
But
the best part of him will always be the creation of an art which has saved my legs from weakness from the disease
Multiple Sclerosis. I am stronger then ever and can walk when the Doctors say I shouldn't be! It's an absolute
miracle to me and the Doctors! Therefore, General Choi will always be my favorite hero!
God
bless and keep you and may you rest in Peace, General Choi!!!

Funniest Moment with the Founder
Back in the mid 80's, I attended a instructors course with the
general sponsored by now Master Steiner in Miami.
At this course, the general had filmed an official ITF patterns video with some of the participants. I was a 4th
dan then and the general had me perform Tae Gae along with some group patterns. I was very proud to be selected.
At the end of the patterns filming, it was the general's birthday, and he decided to film the opening to the video
at the end of the course. All of the video participants lined up by rank to wait for the General's entrance where
we would clap, the general would say a few words, and then we would all be introduced.
Well, there we are in line, we are told the general is about to come in, and the higher rank to my right broke
wind, a silent but deadly, he knocked about 4 of us out. This higher rank is now a Master. It was a riot.
