DVD Extras

The background for the DVD menu screens was constructed from a scan of the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, Volume One, Page 32 titled "Dark Warrior."

I was later able to locate colour plates in several arts books showing a more detailed version of the piece and here is its history:

Hyonmu, the Black Warrior
Tortoise and Snake
North Wall of the burial chamber, The Great Tomb of Kangso

Koguryo, ca. early 7th century A.D. Uhyon-ni, Kangso'gun, South P'yong'an province

The Great Tomb of Kangso is well known among the three tombs in Uhyon'ni for its murals of the guardians of the four directions which are rendered in a dramatic and lively fashion. The tomb is constructed with huge slabs of granite in the form of a single chamber. The paintings are applied directly on the well-dressed stone walls. The painting shown on the north wall of the burial chamber shows a tortoise entwined with a snake, the guardian spirit of the north. The two animals are entwined in a flying pose in contrast to other such paintings which usually show the two animals fighting each other. The tortoise has plumes on its legs, and strides forward with its head turned back toward its tail. The neck is very broad but lacks volume. Tortoise shell patterns are drawn on the back. The snake twines around the legs and body of the tortoise, its neck and tail interlacing in tense and elegant curves.
